Your First Visit

When you come in for your first visit we will review some paperwork regarding confidentiality, your rights and responsibilities and insurance information if applicable. You, as the client, will find my counseling style to be proactive.  I often ask clarifying questions, connect re-occurring themes and discuss suggestions to promote positive change. It is important for me to get to know you and build a trusting, comfortable working relationship.  This will help us get the most out of the time we spend together.  I will work with you to create an individualized treatment plan that fits your needs and personal goals.  We will discuss both long-term goals and short-term objectives in the first session.

According to the majority of studies regarding the success of professional therapy, the number one factor is the therapeutic relationship that is built between the therapist and client.

I encourage my clients to “try out” several counselors before they commit to treatment.  Counselors have different approaches, use varying theories and of course, they are people too.  It is important that you feel comfortable with the person and the type of the therapy they provide.  The only way to find this out is to try out a few sessions and then determine if you would like to go continue.  I will discuss this process with you during the first few session and happily provide referrals to other licensed therapists if you feel open to trying different approaches.
